Why yoga?
The benefits of yoga are becoming more well-documented, and research indicates the following positive outcomes:
* Strength
Yoga simultaneously strengthens and lengthens complementary muscle groups, creating longer and leaner muscles that are thought to be more durable and injury proof.
* Flexibility
Yoga stretches stiff and shortened muscles, correcting imbalances and related problems, such as back pain. In addition, it also puts the joints through their full range of motion, making movement easier.
* Heart health
The more ‘athletic‛ forms of yoga, such as Ashtanga and Vinyasa Flow, can raise the heart rate sufficiently for a cardio workout. Other more relaxing yoga classes have been shown to lower overall heart rate and decrease blood pressure.
* Respiratory health
Studies have shown that yoga breathing (called
pranayama) greatly increases the lungs‛ capacity to
absorb oxygen, and does so faster than most exercise
programmes.
* Mental & personal wellbeing
The meditative and relaxation aspects of yoga
(combined with the physical benefits) reduce stress
and are thought to reduce depression and improve
focus.
Whether you are an athlete looking to improve your performance; a sedentary person looking to improve muscle tone, range of motion and flexibility; or someone interested in exploring the mind-body elements of meditation and breathing, yoga offers something for everyone.
